Our Challenge to You
One of the greatest challenges facing NYC and its growing population is our reliance on an aging electrical grid, a serious concern for America’s financial center. During peak demand periods, the NYC grid is strained to near capacity by almost one million buildings, many of which still rely on obsolete demand management technology. This challenge is deepening in light of extreme weather events like Hurricane Sandy, which exposed the risk of an energy system that relies on centralized generation and distribution.
We believe modular, low-carbon solutions like distributed solar and wind power have a special role in making our electrical grid – and our society – more resilient. In addition, encouraging small-scale property owners to reduce their energy use during peak demand would reduce strain on the system and potentially lead to cost savings to NYC rate-payers. Scaling both solutions would help guarantee all New Yorkers access to energy and electricity when it is needed most.
The winning team will uncover technical solutions that benefit property owners by turning them on to cost-saving and revenue-generating opportunities within the realm of distributed generation and demand response – and help New Yorkers better understand how their energy decisions could impact the local grid.
